A suspect involved in the Amritsar temple blast was killed in a police encounter, while another suspect managed to escape, Punjab Police confirmed on Monday. The encounter took place after officers tracked down the accused in the Rajasansi area of Amritsar. The incident stems from the March 15 explosion outside the Thakur Dwara Temple in Amritsar, where an unidentified individual hurled an explosive device toward the temple premises. The blast caused damage to the temple’s wall and shattered window panes, sparking panic in the Khandwala area. Fortunately, no casualties were reported. According to Punjab Police Chief Gaurav Yadav, Amritsar police acted swiftly on specific intelligence and identified the suspects. While attempting to apprehend them, the accused opened fire, injuring Head Constable Gurpreet Singh and hitting Inspector Amolak Singh's turban.
"In response, the police team acted in self-defence, returning fire and injuring one of the suspects," Yadav stated. The injured suspect was taken to the Civil Hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries. Meanwhile, the second accused managed to escape, and police efforts are ongoing to locate and arrest him. Footage from CCTV cameras in the vicinity showed two unidentified individuals arriving on a motorcycle near the temple. The video captured one of them throwing the explosive device before fleeing the scene with his accomplice. Punjab Police earlier indicated that they suspect the involvement of Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) in the incident. Officials believe the attack could have been an attempt to create unrest in the region.
While the blast caused no injuries, it resulted in widespread concern among local residents. Authorities have since intensified security around religious sites and public areas across Punjab. The ongoing investigation aims to uncover the full motive behind the attack and whether it was linked to any organized networks or cross-border elements. Punjab Police have assured the public that they are working diligently to apprehend the second suspect and bring all those involved to justice. Residents are urged to remain vigilant and cooperate with security agencies as heightened patrols and safety measures continue in sensitive areas.
