On Monday, February 3, 2025, immigrants across the United States, including in Philadelphia, took part in a protest called "A Day Without Immigrants." The goal was to show how important immigrants are to the country by staying home from work, not going to school, and not spending money.
Why the Protest Happened
The protest was in response to immigration policies that have caused concern in many communities. By choosing not to work or spend money for one day, immigrants wanted to show the impact they have on the economy.
Businesses Closed in Support
Many businesses decided to close to support their workers. One such business was Braza’s BBQ Chicken, a Peruvian restaurant in South Philadelphia. The owner, Juan Andres Placencia, said it was a difficult choice because closing for a day meant losing money. However, he believed it was important to stand with other immigrants.
“We, the immigrant population, are part of the backbone of this country’s economy,” he said. “This is our way of showing what happens when we are not there—when we are not working, creating jobs, and contributing.”
People Took to the Streets
In addition to businesses closing, many people gathered for a march in Philadelphia. They walked from 9th Street and Washington Avenue to City Hall to raise awareness.
“If we are not working, you will see the impact,” said one protester. “Offices will not be as clean, businesses will struggle, and services will slow down—because we are the ones keeping things running.”
Recent Immigration Actions
The protest followed recent immigration enforcement actions, including workplace raids that led to detentions. These events have made many immigrants feel unsafe, and some groups have started organizing to protect people from being arrested at work or school.
Since taking office, President Donald Trump’s administration has focused on increasing deportations and strengthening border security. While immigration enforcement has happened under past presidents as well, recent news about arrests has caused fear in many communities.
A Peaceful Protest with a Strong Message
Monday’s protest remained peaceful, with no arrests or incidents reported. Organizers said this may be just the beginning, as more demonstrations could take place in the future to continue highlighting the role immigrants play in American society.
