In response to the devastating floods in Telangana, the Telangana Government Employees Joint Action Committee (JAC) has made a significant contribution to relief efforts. The JAC has announced that all categories of government employees, including ordinary employees, gazetted officers, teachers, workers, pensioners, and contract staff, will donate one day of their basic salary to the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund. This collective gesture is expected to contribute around Rs 100 crore to aid flood victims, with deductions planned for the September salaries.
The severe flooding in Telangana has resulted in at least 16 fatalities, and the state government has responded by offering an ex-gratia payment of Rs 5 lakh to the families of the deceased. Preliminary estimates suggest the damage could amount to Rs 5,000 crore, prompting Chief Minister Revanth Reddy to request Rs 2,000 crore in assistance from the Centre and to declare the floods a national calamity. The heavy rains have caused widespread destruction, including inundation of low-lying areas, damage to standing crops, and disruption of road and railway routes, notably affecting the Hyderabad-Vijayawada National Highway.
In response to the crisis, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah have reached out to Revanth Reddy to assess the situation and have assured support for the relief efforts. The state continues to seek further assistance as local and national agencies work to manage and mitigate the impact of the flooding.
