Thousands of devotees traveling to Prayagraj for the ongoing Maha Kumbh festival have been hit with major traffic jams, with reports indicating queues stretching up to 300 km. Despite expectations that crowds might decrease after Basant Panchmi's Amrit Snan, the number of pilgrims continues to surge. Many vehicles are now stuck on highways, and authorities are struggling to manage the massive flow of traffic.
The jams have been blamed on several factors, including poor navigation planning and bottlenecks around Prayagraj. Motorists have reported travel delays of up to 10-12 hours for covering small distances. In response, police in neighboring Madhya Pradesh have stopped vehicles from entering Prayagraj, and traffic is being monitored closely with coordination from the Prayagraj administration.
Inside Prayagraj, additional traffic disruptions were reported near the city’s railway station, which has been temporarily shut due to overcrowding. Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav has criticized the Uttar Pradesh government for failing to manage the situation effectively, with shortages of essential supplies in the city adding to the frustration. Despite these challenges, over 46 lakh devotees participated in the holy dip on a busy day.
