As spring unfolds in Chicago, the cherry blossoms in Jackson Park have reached their peak, offering a breathtaking display of pink and white hues. Located just south of the Museum of Science and Industry, the approximately 190 cherry trees surrounding the Columbia Basin are in full bloom, attracting visitors from across the region. These trees, planted in 2013 to commemorate the 120th anniversary of the World’s Columbian Exposition, have become a seasonal highlight on Chicago's South Side. After a couple of years where weather conditions hindered the full bloom, this year's favorable climate has allowed the blossoms to flourish, much to the delight of locals and tourists alike.
Visitors are encouraged to take public transportation to the park or utilize public parking lots on the east and southeast sides of the museum. The park is open from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m., with the Wooded Island area accessible from dawn until dusk. To celebrate the cherry blossom season, the Japanese Arts Foundation, in partnership with the Chicago Park District, is hosting the annual Hanami Festival on April 26 from 1 to 3 p.m. The event, held near the Columbia Basin and Garden of the Phoenix, will feature performances by Tsukasa Taiko, children's taiko drumming workshops, origami folding, and e-tegami (picture letter) art activities. The festival is free and open to all ages, weather permitting.
As the cherry blossoms are expected to last for about two weeks, now is the perfect time to visit Jackson Park and immerse yourself in the beauty of this fleeting natural spectacle. Whether you're a seasoned photographer or simply looking to enjoy a peaceful stroll among the blossoms, the park offers a serene escape from the bustling city life.
Don't miss this opportunity to experience one of Chicago's most picturesque springtime traditions.
