In response to improved air quality in the Delhi National Capital Region (NCR), the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) has eased pollution curbs. The CAQM announced the revocation of Stage-4 and Stage-3 measures of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) in the entire NCR, effective immediately. This decision comes after the Supreme Court allowed the relaxation, following consistent improvement in the air quality index (AQI) since November 29, with AQI levels falling below 300. However, the Supreme Court emphasized that pollution control measures should not fall below Stage-2 standards to effectively manage air pollution.
Stage-4 curbs had included restrictions like a ban on diesel-run medium and heavy vehicles (BS-IV or below) in Delhi, with exceptions for essential goods. With the easing of restrictions, Delhi continues to enforce Stage-2 measures, which include a ban on coal and firewood use in restaurants, hotels, and eateries, along with limits on diesel generators, except for emergencies or essential services. The AQI range for Delhi now stands in the "moderate" category, as the air quality index recorded today is 161.
