Her family in Satara, Maharashtra, learned about the accident two days later and has been struggling to secure a US visa since February 16.
Visa Delays Prevent Family From Reaching Nilam
Nilam’s father, Tanaji Shinde, has been desperately trying to book a visa appointment to visit his critically injured daughter, but the next available slot is for next year."We got to know about the accident on February 16 and have been trying for a visa since then. But we haven't got it yet," Mr. Shinde stated, highlighting the urgency of their situation.The hospital in California has been providing daily health updates to the family. They informed the family that Nilam had to undergo brain surgery, requiring immediate parental consent, which further complicated the situation.
Supriya Sule Appeals for Help
NCP (SP) MP Supriya Sule has publicly appealed to External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, urging him to intervene and assist Nilam’s family in obtaining an emergency visa.."This is an alarming issue, and we all need to get together and help resolve it," Ms. Sule posted on X (formerly Twitter) while tagging Mr. Jaishankar for assistance.Despite her political differences with Jaishankar, Sule acknowledged his empathy and willingness to assist Indian citizens in distress abroad."My experience with the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has been extraordinarily good. They always go the extra mile to help," she said, adding that she has also contacted the US Embassy in Mumbai to expedite the visa process.

According to Nilam’s uncle, Sanjay Kadam, she sustained multiple fractures in her hands and legs due to the crash. Her roommates informed the family about the accident, and the police admitted her to the hospital for emergency care."They (the hospital administration) took our permission to operate on her brain. She is in a coma right now, and we need to be there," Mr. Kadam said, emphasizing the family's distress.
