In December 2024, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued an updated warning regarding a voluntary recall of Lay’s Classic Potato Chips due to the presence of undeclared milk. Frito-Lay, the maker of the popular chips, identified a batch of 13 oz bags that may contain milk as an ingredient, which was not disclosed on the packaging. The affected bags, which were sold in Oregon and Washington, carry an expiration date of February 11, 2025. The issue was first raised by a consumer contact, prompting the company to issue the recall for around 6,000 bags that were sold in select retail stores and e-commerce distributors.
This recall specifically targets those who have milk allergies or severe sensitivities, as the presence of milk could lead to serious or potentially life-threatening allergic reactions. The FDA classified this recall as a “Class I” recall, which is the most serious category, indicating that there is a reasonable probability that consuming the affected product could cause adverse health consequences or death. Although no allergic reactions have been reported as of the announcement, the FDA and Frito-Lay are urging consumers who may have purchased the affected bags to check their packaging carefully and avoid consumption.
The recall is limited to Lay’s Classic Potato Chips with the February 2025 expiration date and does not include any other Lay's flavors, sizes, or products. The company has confirmed that no other products are involved in this recall, ensuring that the issue is contained. The affected bags were available for purchase as early as November 3, 2024. Consumers in Oregon and Washington who have purchased these chips are being advised to return them to the store for a refund or discard them. Frito-Lay is working to notify customers directly and resolve the issue promptly to ensure public safety.
