Maharashtra has recently observed an increase in cases of Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS), a rare neurological disorder where the immune system attacks the peripheral nervous system. This condition can cause symptoms such as muscle weakness, numbness, and in severe cases, paralysis. The state health department has reported 110 suspected GBS cases, with one death and eight confirmed diagnoses so far. The majority of these cases are from Pune, with others reported in Pimpri Chinchwad and various districts.
Dr. Priyanka Sehrawat, a neurologist, has highlighted gastroenteritis caused by the C. jejuni bacteria as a significant trigger for GBS, urging the public to be cautious. While many factors contribute to GBS, C. jejuni infections can be avoided by maintaining proper hygiene, particularly with food and water consumption.
The Maharashtra government has assured the public not to panic and advised visiting a government hospital if any symptoms of GBS appear. Additionally, preventive measures like eating safely, improving immunity, and ensuring proper food hygiene are recommended.
GBS often follows infections like viral illnesses, and early treatment is crucial. Dr. Sehrawat emphasized that the condition can be managed effectively if treated within two weeks, urging people to stay alert but not fearful.
