Nandamuri Taraka Rama Rao (NTR) is widely regarded as the first pan-Indian star, paving the way for today’s pan-India stars like Prabhas, Allu Arjun, and Ram Charan. Beginning his career in the 1950s, NTR worked in multilingual films and quickly became a household name. His 1952 folklore drama Pathala Bhairavi was made in Telugu, Hindi, and Tamil, performing exceptionally well across all languages. This was just the beginning, as NTR followed up with successful films like Chandi Rani and Santhosham, the latter being remade in Hindi as Naya Aadmi, further cementing his popularity in Hindi-speaking regions.
His rising fame caught the attention of Bollywood filmmaker V. Shantaram, who offered NTR the role of Dushyanth in his dream project based on the love story of King Dushyanth and Shakuntala. Despite immense respect for Shantaram, NTR chose to focus on Telugu cinema and declined more Hindi projects.
NTR’s portrayal of Lord Krishna in Telugu cinema became iconic. He was later offered ₹1 crore to reprise the role in a Hindi film but turned it down, choosing instead to stay connected to his Telugu audience. He played the same role in a Telugu film for a modest ₹10,000, demonstrating his unwavering commitment to elevating Telugu cinema.
For over four decades, NTR remained dedicated to Telugu producers, directors, and technicians. His son, actor Balakrishna, ventured into Hindi cinema with Brahmarishi Viswamitra in 1991, and now his grandson Jr NTR is set to make his Hindi debut with War 2 in 2025, continuing the Nandamuri family’s cinematic legacy.
