On Wednesday, the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) led by Jagdambika Pal adopted the draft report and the amended Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024. The committee's report, which includes significant revisions to the bill, will be tabled in Parliament on Monday as part of the ongoing Budget Session. The amendments to the bill are aimed at ensuring the benefits of Waqf properties reach marginalized groups, such as the poor, women, and orphans. This inclusion marks a major development in the bill's framework.
Jagdambika Pal, alongside BJP MP Sanjay Jaiswal, will present both the Hindi and English versions of the report in Parliament, along with the evidence collected by the committee during its discussions. The committee had scrutinized 44 clauses of the bill, during which amendments were proposed to 14 of these clauses, leading to majority votes in favor of the proposed changes. Opposition leaders, however, submitted their dissent notes, reflecting their differing opinions on the report's contents.Jagdambika Pal also met with Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Thursday to formally present the final report, which will be a key point of discussion during the current session. The bill, once passed, is expected to bring significant reforms in the management and distribution of Waqf properties.
