NASA astronaut Sunita Williams is concluding her extended space mission after spending over eight months in space. Williams, along with fellow astronaut Butch Willmore, shared details about the upcoming Crew-10 mission in an exclusive conversation with CNN. The mission will launch from Earth on March 12 and dock with the International Space Station (ISS), where the astronauts will conduct their duties before handing over responsibilities to a new Space Station Commander. Williams, who is currently in charge of the ISS, will oversee the transition before boarding the Dragon spacecraft to return to Earth on March 19.
The decision to end their mission was expedited after a request from former President Donald Trump, who urged SpaceX CEO Elon Musk to bring the astronauts back to Earth earlier than initially planned. Despite this demand, NASA confirmed that it would bring the astronauts home as soon as it was practical, with the Crew-10 mission planned accordingly. NASA’s Commercial Crew Program head, Steve Stich, praised SpaceX for their adaptability in handling the situation, reflecting the unpredictable nature of human spaceflight.
This decision could also affect other space missions, including Axiom's planned Crew Dragon flight, which aims to send government astronauts from India, Poland, and Hungary to space. While Axiom has yet to comment on the potential impact of the Crew-10 changes, the mission’s adjustments may cause delays. The Crew Dragon capsule, developed by SpaceX with $3 billion in funding from NASA, remains central to the success of private and government astronaut missions, aimed at reducing spaceflight costs while fostering a private space market.
