Chelsea striker Sam Kerr was found not guilty of racially aggravated harassment by a jury at Kingston Crown Court in London after an incident involving a British police officer in southwest London on January 30, 2023. Kerr, along with her partner Kristie Mewis, had been out drinking and was taken to Twickenham Police Station after a taxi driver complained about unpaid clean-up costs and a broken rear window. At the station, Kerr made derogatory comments to police officer Stephen Lovell, calling him “stupid and white,” leading to the charges.
The jury deliberated for over four hours before returning a not guilty verdict. Kerr expressed relief after the verdict, acknowledging her poor choice of words but clarifying that she never intended to insult anyone. Football Australia also expressed support for Kerr, stating they would speak with her to reflect on the incident and continue providing support.
The trial focused on whether Kerr’s comments were racially aggravated, with Kerr defending her actions as an expression of frustration over what she perceived as unfair treatment. She claimed her comments were not intended to insult but to express her feelings of being dismissed due to her race.
Kerr’s legal team had previously attempted to have the case thrown out, citing procedural issues with the prosecution’s decision to bring charges nearly a year after the incident. Kerr, currently recovering from a knee injury, made her debut for Chelsea in 2020 and has faced challenges in both her career and personal life, including dealing with homophobic abuse following her pregnancy announcement with Mewis.
