India's Foreign Secretary, Vikram Misri, made a day-long visit to Dhaka on Monday for crucial talks with his Bangladeshi counterpart Mohammad Jashim Uddin. The visit comes amid deteriorating relations between India and Bangladesh, following the ouster of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in August due to a massive uprising.
Mr. Misri arrived in Dhaka on an Indian Air Force jet, marking the first high-level visit from New Delhi since the political upheaval in Bangladesh. He was received by a senior Bangladesh Foreign Ministry official and Indian High Commissioner Pranay Verma at the airport.
During his visit, Misri held talks with Uddin and is scheduled to meet Bangladesh's de-facto foreign minister Mohammad Touhid Hossain. Additionally, he will pay a courtesy call to the country's interim government head, Muhammad Yunus, who took power after Hasina sought shelter in India following the protests.
Tensions between the two nations have escalated, primarily due to growing concerns over violence against religious minorities, especially Hindus, in Bangladesh. These attacks, along with the arrest of Hindu monk Chinmoy Krishna Das, have heightened the strain in diplomatic ties. Recent weeks have seen attacks on temples and other minorities, alarming India and prompting the visit from Misri to address the ongoing issues.
