US President-elect Donald Trump has issued a stern warning to Hamas, stating that "all hell will break out" if American hostages are not released before his inauguration on January 20. Speaking at a news conference in Mar-a-Lago, Florida, Trump emphasized that the release of hostages is a critical priority and expressed frustration at the delay in negotiations.
"If those hostages aren’t back by the time I take office, all hell will break out in the Middle East," Trump warned. His remarks came in response to a question about ongoing negotiations led by his Special Envoy to the Middle East, Steven Charles Witkoff. Witkoff, who recently returned from the region, expressed optimism about progress, noting that they are on the verge of a breakthrough. He attributed the advancements to Trump’s leadership and the red lines he has clearly communicated.
"I actually believe that we’re working in tandem in a really good way," Witkoff said, highlighting the momentum gained in negotiations taking place in Doha. He added that by the inauguration, there is hope for a significant announcement regarding the hostages.
Trump, however, did not hold back his criticism of Hamas, condemning the October 7 attack that resulted in the hostages being taken. He recounted emotional stories of families pleading for the return of their loved ones, emphasizing the human toll of the crisis. "They should have given them back a long time ago — they should have never taken them," Trump said. "It will not be good for Hamas and it will not be good frankly for anyone. All hell will break out."
Despite the strong rhetoric, Trump clarified that his administration is not seeking to derail ongoing negotiations but stressed the urgency of resolving the issue before his presidency begins.
