The renaming of the "Gulf of Mexico" to the "Gulf of America" began rolling out across the United States on Monday, following President Donald Trump’s announcement last month to Americanize the name. On Monday, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) issued a charting notice confirming that its systems were being updated to reflect the new name. Additionally, the FAA was updating charts to restore the former name of Mount McKinley in Alaska, replacing "Denali."
"Please be advised that the FAA is in the process of updating our data and charts to reflect the name change from the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America, as well as the renaming of Denali back to Mount McKinley. These updates will be incorporated in the next publication cycle," the notice stated.
"This Charting Notice follows President Trump’s directive in Executive Order 14172, ‘Restoring Names That Honor American Greatness,’ mandating these changes."

On January 7, Trump first revealed plans to rename the Gulf of Mexico and signed an executive order finalizing the change weeks later.
"We’re officially renaming the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America. It has a beautiful ring to it and covers a vast area," Trump stated on Tuesday. "The Gulf of America—what a great name, and so fitting."The announcement was met with enthusiasm on social media, with users quickly spotting the changes on Google Maps.
"Google Maps FINALLY shows the Gulf of America! Isn’t it beautiful?" one user posted on X. Another added, "I don’t like Google, but I have to admit—when zoomed out, mine says ‘Gulf of America,’ and it looks incredible."
"Google Maps bows to Trump," another comment read. The renaming coincided with Trump’s proclamation on Sunday declaring February 9 as "Gulf of America Day."
Trump signed the presidential order while flying over the body of water en route to Super Bowl LIX in New Orleans. "Air Force One is currently in international waters, marking the first historic flight over what is now officially the Gulf of America," the White House posted on X. In his proclamation, Trump justified the change, stating, "This decision reflects the long-standing significance of the area formerly known as the Gulf of Mexico, which has been a vital asset to our once-thriving nation and remains an enduring part of America." Google, responding to user inquiries, confirmed its commitment to updating names in line with official government sources.
