Australia’s 2025 Champions Trophy campaign will face a major setback as captain Pat Cummins will miss the tournament due to an ongoing ankle injury. The injury occurred towards the end of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series, which Australia won 3-1 in January 2025. Initially included in the preliminary squad, Cummins was ruled out after failing to recover in time. Alongside him, fast bowler Josh Hazlewood, dealing with a persistent hip issue, will also miss the tournament. Additionally, all-rounders Marcus Stoinis and Mitchell Marsh, both key players, will not be available. Stoinis has announced his retirement from one-day internationals, while Marsh was unable to recover from a back injury.
As a result of these absences, Cricket Australia will name replacements ahead of the 12 February deadline. The team is already dealing with a reshuffled lineup for the upcoming Champions Trophy, with head coach Andrew McDonald confirming that either Steve Smith or Travis Head will take over the captaincy. The absence of key players presents an opportunity for others to step up, and Australia’s selectors are expected to call on replacements from the existing pool of players, including some of the squad members already participating in the Sri Lanka ODI series.
With several crucial absences, the Australian squad for the Champions Trophy is being restructured. Leg-spinner Tanveer Sangha, who had joined the Test squad, will stay on for the ODI series. Meanwhile, debutants Sean Abbott and Cooper Connolly will also remain with the team, adding depth to the squad. Additional players, including top-order batter Jake Fraser-McGurk, seam-bowling all-rounder Ben Dwarshuis, and left-arm paceman Spencer Johnson, will join the ODI squad as Australia works to finalize its lineup. Despite the injuries, the team remains confident about their chances in the upcoming global tournament.
