Australia’s 2025 Champions Trophy campaign will face a major setback as captain Pat Cummins will miss the tournament due to an ongoing ankle injury. The injury occurred towards the end of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series, which Australia won 3-1 in January 2025. Initially included in the preliminary squad, Cummins was ruled out after failing to recover in time. Alongside him, fast bowler Josh Hazlewood, dealing with a persistent hip issue, will also miss the tournament. Additionally, all-rounders Marcus Stoinis and Mitchell Marsh, both key players, will not be available. Stoinis has announced his retirement from one-day internationals, while Marsh was unable to recover from a back injury.
As a result of these absences, Cricket Australia will name replacements ahead of the 12 February deadline. The team is already dealing with a reshuffled lineup for the upcoming Champions Trophy, with head coach Andrew McDonald confirming that either Steve Smith or Travis Head will take over the captaincy.
