Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has strongly rebutted Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s claims regarding the 2024 Indian elections, labelling them "factually incorrect." Zuckerberg, in a recent appearance on the Joe Rogan podcast, suggested that most incumbent governments globally, including India's, lost in the 2024 elections due to post-Covid dissatisfaction. However, the Narendra Modi-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) won a decisive third term in India, securing the trust of over 640 million voters.
Vaishnaw responded on his X profile, correcting Zuckerberg’s statement, emphasizing that India’s 2024 elections were a reflection of the public’s faith in Prime Minister Modi’s leadership. He pointed out that the Modi government had delivered substantial benefits during the pandemic, including free food for 800 million people, 2.2 billion free vaccines, and international aid to various nations. Vaishnaw also highlighted India’s emergence as the fastest-growing major economy, making the third-term victory a testament to effective governance and public trust.
The Union Minister expressed disappointment in Zuckerberg’s misinformation and called for upholding facts and credibility, especially when discussing significant global issues. Zuckerberg had commented that 2024 was a major election year globally, with incumbents losing in many countries, attributing this to the handling of the Covid-19 pandemic and its aftermath.
Vaishnaw’s statement serves as a fact-check against Zuckerberg's broad generalization, underlining the success of India’s democratic process and the continued popularity of the current government under PM Modi.
