Trump Announces Venezuela’s Agreement to Take Back Migrants After High-Level Talks
Former President Donald Trump announced on Truth Social that Venezuela had agreed to accept back Venezuelan migrants who had entered the United States illegally, including those linked to the Tren de Aragua gang.
The announcement followed a meeting between Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and Richard Grenell, a senior Trump administration official. As a result of these discussions, six U.S. detainees held in Venezuela were released.
In his statement, Trump wrote, "Venezuela has agreed to receive, back into their Country, all Venezuela illegal aliens who were encamped in the U.S., including gang members of Tren de Aragua. Venezuela has further agreed to supply the transportation back."
However, Venezuela has not independently confirmed the deal. A government statement acknowledged that migration was among the topics discussed during the meeting, as reported by the Venezuelan state-sponsored broadcaster, TeleSUR.
Detainees Released After Talks Trump and Grenell also announced on social media that six U.S. detainees had been freed, although their identities have not been disclosed. Grenell shared that the detainees, dressed in light blue Venezuelan prison uniforms, had boarded a flight back to the United States.
"We are wheels up and headed home with these six American citizens," Grenell wrote on X (formerly Twitter), adding that they had spoken to Trump and were deeply grateful.
The release comes amid heightened tensions between the U.S. and Venezuela, particularly following the disputed July 2024 election, in which Maduro claimed victory despite strong opposition and international condemnation. Reports indicate that at least nine U.S. citizens or residents were among over 2,200 individuals detained by Venezuelan authorities after nationwide protests.
Diplomatic Developments Following the meeting, Maduro characterized the talks as respectful and emphasized that there was "zero agenda." He expressed hope for a "new beginning in bilateral relations" between Venezuela and the U.S.
Despite these discussions, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt clarified that Grenell's visit did not signal U.S. recognition of Maduro as Venezuela’s legitimate leader.
