Virender Sehwag Sledges Rayudu Over Dhoni Praise, MS Dhoni Hits Milestone in IPL 2025

In a light-hearted yet sharp exchange during an IPL 2025 commentary panel, Virender Sehwag openly sledged fellow commentator and former teammate Ambati Rayudu over his enthusiastic praise of MS Dhoni. The moment occurred following Chennai Super Kings' (CSK) match against Punjab Kings (PBKS), in which Dhoni, despite his valiant knock, could not take his side to victory. Rayudu, who has been one of Dhoni’s strongest vocal supporters in recent years, was in full praise mode after the CSK captain struck an explosive 27 off 12 balls at No. 5, hitting three sixes and a four. Though Dhoni’s late surge couldn't change the outcome of the match—CSK lost by 28 runs—his knock drew loud cheers from fans and high praise in the commentary box.

The conversation began with Aakash Chopra pointing out a recent trend. “There was a statement about an uncapped player, who hails from Jharkhand, ‘used to’ hit helicopter shots. He batted yesterday. He came in late, but it wasn’t his fault. He came in late in the context of the match,” said Chopra during the post-match analysis. Rayudu, ever enthusiastic, replied, “See, there he is—Thala. What an innings he played. He played with intent. He is a special player, Viru paji. The excitement is rising in the commentary box too.”

Sehwag, never one to miss a chance to lighten the mood with a jab, responded cheekily: “I’m not denying that the player is special. But you said ‘used to hit’ helicopter shots. I was just correcting the grammar. He still hits those shots. You should have said this.” While the tone remained jovial, the moment subtly highlighted the enduring admiration and loyalty Rayudu holds for Dhoni, while also showcasing Sehwag’s characteristic wit.

Meanwhile, MS Dhoni, at 43, continues to prove age is just a number. The CSK legend added yet another milestone to his illustrious IPL career during the PBKS clash—becoming the first wicket-keeper to complete 150 catches in the IPL. He achieved this feat by catching Nehal Wadhera in the 8th over off Ravichandran Ashwin’s bowling. Dinesh Karthik trails behind Dhoni with 137 catches. In addition to his catches, Dhoni also has an impressive 45 stumpings, cementing his legacy as one of the finest wicket-keepers in the league's history.

Despite CSK’s struggles this season—losing four of their five matches—Dhoni has remained a shining beacon for fans. His recent batting stats speak volumes:

  • IPL 2025 Runs: 103 in five innings

  • Average: 51.50

  • Strike Rate: 153.73

  • Best Score: 30

In his previous outing against Delhi Capitals, Dhoni’s slower 30 off 26 balls had sparked concerns about his finishing ability. However, his innings against PBKS helped silence critics and sparked optimism among CSK supporters. As CSK continues to chase wins and turn their season around, Dhoni’s leadership and performances remain crucial. Whether it's his helicopter shots, lightning-quick glovework, or sheer presence, Dhoni continues to be a force in IPL 2025—even as former teammates like Rayudu and Sehwag spar playfully over his enduring brilliance.
