Google has introduced a memory feature for its Gemini Advanced AI, allowing it to remember and reference past conversations, significantly enhancing its functionality. This update enables users to experience more natural and contextually relevant interactions, as Gemini can now build on previous chats instead of treating each conversation as an entirely new exchange. The ability to retain information from earlier discussions makes Gemini smarter and more intuitive, providing users with a more seamless and efficient AI experience.Previously, every conversation with Gemini started fresh, requiring users to manually search through old chats if they wanted continuity. With this new feature, Gemini can now recall and summarise past interactions, allowing users to effortlessly pick up where they left off. For instance, if a user previously discussed the solar system, they can now ask Gemini to recall details from that chat, making follow-up questions more efficient and removing the need to reiterate information. This improvement ensures a smoother and more productive user experience.
 

Gemini’s memory feature gives it a competitive edge over OpenAI’s ChatGPT, which primarily remembers general details rather than specific past interactions. Unlike ChatGPT, which relies on long-term memory for broad topics, Gemini’s ability to recall specific conversations and details makes it more versatile and efficient for users who require continuity in their interactions. This feature enhances personalization, making Gemini a more tailored AI assistant capable of remembering preferences, previous discussions, and important details more accurately.
 

Google has also introduced privacy controls, allowing users to review, delete, or manage how long their past conversations are stored. Users who prefer not to use the memory feature can disable it altogether via the “My Activity” dashboard under Gemini Apps Activity settings. This level of transparency and control ensures that users have full autonomy over their data and interactions with the AI.To maintain clarity and trust, Gemini will explicitly indicate when it is referencing previous interactions in its responses. This transparency feature ensures that users are aware of when past conversations are being utilized, preventing confusion and reinforcing confidence in how Gemini generates its responses.
 

The memory feature is currently available to Gemini Advanced subscribers on the Google One AI Premium Plan, accessible on both web and mobile apps. Google has also announced plans to expand this functionality to more languages and Google Workspace Business and Enterprise customers in the near future.
