In the lead-up to the Delhi Assembly election, the 'Yamuna water war' has become a heated political issue, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi fiercely defending the BJP against allegations made by AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal. The controversy began earlier this week when Kejriwal accused the BJP government in Haryana of deliberately mixing "poison" into the Yamuna water supplied to Delhi, alleging high levels of ammonia due to untreated industrial waste and pollution.
At an election rally in Delhi's Ghonda neighborhood, PM Modi vehemently rejected the claims, saying it was impossible for Haryana to poison the water, especially water that the Prime Minister himself consumes. He questioned how the BJP could deliberately contaminate the water while emphasizing the failure of the AAP government to address persistent issues in the city, including water pollution and infrastructure problems. Modi's speech also featured an attack on Kejriwal's tenure, referencing controversies like the 'sheeshmahal' and liquor policy scams, accusing him of corruption.
The AAP has amplified the accusation of "water terrorism," with Chief Minister Atishi writing to the Election Commission and Delhi Lieutenant Governor, demanding action against the BJP for allegedly contaminating the water. The Delhi Jal Board has dismissed Kejriwal’s accusations, calling them baseless, while AAP leaders suggest that the water board's statement was influenced by political pressure from the BJP.
