The Election Commission of India has announced the schedule for the Delhi Assembly elections, set for February 5, 2025, with votes being counted on February 8. Over 1.55 crore voters in the national capital will participate in the election to choose members of the 8th Delhi Assembly. A total of 13,033 polling stations will be set up across 70 constituencies, 12 of which are reserved.
The Election Commission revealed that polling will take place in a single phase, with the last date for filing nominations on January 17 and withdrawal by January 20. The announcement also marked the beginning of the model code of conduct in Delhi.
Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar highlighted that more than 2 lakh first-time voters will cast their ballots in this election. The poll body also mentioned special provisions for senior citizens and people with disabilities to ensure easy access to polling booths. Those above 85 years will also be allowed to vote from home.
The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), led by Arvind Kejriwal, has ramped up its preparations, calling the election a battle between "the politics of work and the politics of abuses." Meanwhile, BJP President welcomed the announcement and appealed to voters to choose a government focused on Delhi's all-around development.
The Chief Election Commissioner also dismissed allegations of Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) tampering, calling them "tamper-proof" and reaffirming the integrity of the voting process. Regarding allegations of voter list manipulation, Mr. Kumar assured that the Election Commission follows a strict procedure to ensure the accuracy of voter lists.
The upcoming Delhi Assembly election is a high-stakes contest, with the ruling AAP seeking a third consecutive term, while the BJP and Congress are both actively campaigning to challenge its dominance in the capital.
