A court in Bangladesh has issued a second arrest warrant for former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, accusing her of enforced disappearances during her time in power. The new charges, which were announced by the chief prosecutor of the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT), Tajul Islam, involve Hasina, her military adviser, and several law enforcement officials. Over 500 people were allegedly abducted by Bangladesh's security forces under her regime, with some of them detained in secret locations for years. Since Hasina's ousting, victims have shared troubling accounts of their experiences, leading to the recent developments in the case.
This is the second arrest warrant issued for Hasina, with the first one coming in October 2024 on charges of crimes against humanity. These charges stem from a student-led uprising in 2024, which forced Hasina to flee the country. Prosecutors allege that Hasina and her allies were responsible for the deaths of protesters during the unrest, which was sparked by violent demonstrations over government job quotas.
Following her ouster, Hasina fled to India, and Bangladesh has since requested her extradition to stand trial, though India has yet to respond. Meanwhile, dozens of her allies have been arrested, and the interim government has promised to prosecute those responsible for the crackdown that led to the deaths of over 700 people. The UN has been invited to assist with investigating the killings.
