Outgoing U.S. President Joe Biden has condemned ongoing efforts to minimize the significance of the January 6, 2021, Capitol attack, where a mob of Donald Trump supporters stormed the U.S. Capitol in an attempt to block the certification of the 2020 election. In an opinion piece published in The Washington Post, Biden recalled the violent insurrection that led to chaos at the Capitol, contrasting it with the upcoming peaceful certification of the election results.
Biden expressed pride that American democracy had withstood the attack, reassuring the nation that the January 6 certification process this year would be orderly and devoid of violence. He also pointed out the contrast between the chaotic events of 2021 and the peaceful transition planned for this year, with Vice President Kamala Harris presiding over the session to certify Donald Trump's 2020 defeat.
Biden also condemned the effort to distort the history of that day, writing that some have tried to rewrite what was witnessed by millions of Americans. He urged the public to remember the events of January 6, 2021, and commit to honoring those who fought for and died for democracy. Despite the tension surrounding Trump's absence from Biden's 2021 inauguration, Biden stated he would be present for Trump's swearing-in as the next president in 2025.
