The Indian Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has clarified that the government has not received any communication from the United States regarding the Adani Group. In its weekly briefing, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal rejected media reports about the US summoning Adani Group Chairman Gautam Adani and other executives. He emphasized that the issue is a private legal matter involving individuals and the US Department of Justice, with no prior notification sent to the Indian government.
The Adani Group also released a statement, asserting that its Chairman Gautam Adani, his nephew Sagar Adani, and senior executive Vneet Jaain are not facing any bribery charges. The group noted that the US Department of Justice's indictment, which includes multiple counts, does not accuse the three individuals of violating the US Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA). They clarified that the indictment mentions only discussions or promises of bribes but offers no evidence of bribery involving Indian government officials.
The statement also criticized media outlets for "reckless" reporting, which the group claims has caused significant harm, including the cancellation of international projects, market instability, and scrutiny from investors. Senior lawyer Mukul Rohatgi also weighed in, pointing out that the charges do not specify who was allegedly bribed, further undermining the claims.
This legal matter has brought intense media attention and repercussions for the Adani Group, but the Indian government maintains it is not involved in the case at this point in time.
