A tragic incident at an Indian restaurant in Gudauri, Georgia, has claimed the lives of 12 individuals. According to authorities, the victims showed no signs of violence, and the case is being treated as a negligent loss of life under Article 116 of Georgia’s Criminal Code.
The deceased, believed to be restaurant employees, were discovered in a sleeping area on the second floor. Authorities suspect the incident may have been caused by a generator used in a closed indoor space following a power outage the previous evening.
Of the 12 victims, 11 were foreign nationals, reportedly from Punjab, India, while one was a Georgian citizen. The Indian Embassy has confirmed that it is in contact with the victims' families and is working with local authorities to repatriate the mortal remains at the earliest.
“Individuals who have died in the incident in Georgia are mostly from the state of Punjab. The Embassy is in touch with the families and is working with local authorities to repatriate the mortal remains at the earliest,” a source stated.
A police investigation is underway, with forensic experts conducting examinations and interviews to determine the exact cause of death. The Mtskheta-Mtianeti Ministry of Internal Affairs has assured a thorough probe into the circumstances leading to the tragedy. The identities of the victims have not yet been made public.
The Indian Embassy continues to coordinate efforts to support the families of the deceased and expedite necessary formalities.
