Despite warnings from Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, MLAs from the ruling coalition in Andhra Pradesh are reportedly continuing to interfere in liquor and sand businesses. Complaints of intimidation and demands for commissions from business owners have been flooding in, despite Naidu's instructions to refrain from such activities. The new excise policy has also been marred by controversies, with allegations of MLAs obstructing businesspeople from participating in the tender process for liquor shops.
Reports suggest that these MLAs and their associates are demanding a significant share, ranging from 30-40%, from liquor shop owners in their constituencies. Business owners who refuse to comply are facing harassment, including obstacles to setting up shops and selective enforcement of regulations by officials allegedly influenced by the MLAs. This interference has led to delays in issuing regular licenses to around 15% of newly allocated liquor shops, causing losses for business owners.
Districts such as Eluru, Tirupati, Kurnool, Guntur, and East Godavari have reported instances of MLA interference in liquor and sand businesses. Landlords renting premises for liquor shops have also faced threats from MLA supporters if they do not align with the demands. The situation has raised concerns about the impact on business owners and the overall business environment in the state.
