The first day of the second Test between India and New Zealand was a crucial one for the home team, coming on the heels of a loss in the first Test. In a bid to maintain their impressive form, India made three key changes to their lineup, bringing in Washington Sundar, Shubman Gill, and Akash Deep. Former Indian captain Sunil Gavaskar commented on the changes, noting, "I don't see a lot of teams making three changes unless there are injury concerns. Washington Sundar's inclusion suggests they are worried about their batting," highlighting the emphasis on strengthening the lower order.
Washington Sundar certainly justified the selectors' faith, delivering an outstanding performance with the ball, claiming seven wickets and helping to dismiss New Zealand for just 259 runs.
During the New Zealand innings, Gavaskar also made an interesting observation regarding field placements. Some viewers speculated his comments were directed at captain Rohit Sharma, but Gavaskar clarified he was discussing fielding strategies. "If you had fielders like that – long-on and long-off – for the spinners before a lofted shot had been played, the captain would've been called a defensive captain.
