US President Donald Trump has issued a stern warning to Russian President Vladimir Putin, threatening "devastating" sanctions if Moscow refuses to accept a ceasefire agreement in the ongoing Ukraine war. Speaking after a meeting with Ireland’s Prime Minister Micheal Martin at the White House, Trump revealed that US negotiators are en route to Russia for talks aimed at brokering a ceasefire. This development comes shortly after Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky agreed to a 30-day truce proposal. Although Trump did not disclose detailed information regarding the peace talks, the White House later confirmed that Trump's special envoy, Steve Witkoff, is scheduled to travel to Moscow later this week to discuss the ceasefire terms directly with Russian officials.
"We could do things very bad for Russia. It would be devastating for Russia. But I don't want to do that because I want to see peace, and we're getting close to maybe getting something done," Trump told reporters during his press briefing. The US President expressed optimism about the situation, stating, "People are going to Russia right now as we speak. And hopefully, we can get a ceasefire from Russia. And if we do, I think that would be 80 percent of the way to getting this horrible bloodbath finished." The warning follows Trump's tense confrontation with President Zelensky two weeks earlier, when both leaders engaged in a heated exchange at the White House over the United States' stance on the conflict. Trump had previously halted military aid and intelligence sharing with Ukraine as part of his strategic pressure on Kyiv. However, the aid was resumed after Ukraine formally accepted the 30-day ceasefire proposal on Tuesday.
Following the ceasefire agreement, President Zelensky said that Ukraine welcomes the deal and considers it a positive step. However, he stressed that the success of the ceasefire now depends on Russia’s willingness to comply. "Ukraine welcomes this proposal, we consider it positive, we are ready to take such a step. The United States of America has to convince Russia to do this," Zelensky said. "So we agree, and if the Russians agree, the ceasefire will work at that very moment," he added. Despite Ukraine's acceptance of the truce, Zelensky expressed concerns about Russia's sincerity, stating that Ukrainians have "no confidence" that fighting will truly cease.
"I have emphasized this many times: none of us trust the Russians," Zelensky warned. "Everything depends on whether Russia wants a ceasefire and silence, or it wants to continue killing people," he added. As the conflict nears its three-year mark, global pressure has intensified for a peaceful resolution. The ongoing war has resulted in thousands of casualties, displaced millions, and caused severe economic disruption in Eastern Europe. With Trump’s warning and fresh diplomatic efforts underway, the world watches closely to see whether Russia will embrace peace talks or face the threat of punishing economic sanctions that could further isolate Moscow on the global stage.
