Indian motorsport sensation Kush Maini has been announced as a Reserve and Test Driver for the Alpine Formula One team for the 2025 season, marking a significant milestone in his racing career. This appointment makes Maini only the third Indian driver to join a Formula 1 team, following in the footsteps of Narain Karthikeyan and Karun Chandhok. Kush Maini, who joined the Alpine Academy in October 2023, has quickly impressed the team with his consistent performances. He will now join Alpine's elite pool of Test and Reserve drivers, alongside notable names like Franco Colapinto, Ryo Hirakawa, and Paul Aron. The Australian rookie Jack Doohan will represent Alpine on the track this season alongside experienced French driver Pierre Gasly.
In a social media post, Alpine F1 confirmed Maini’s new role:
"Kush Maini. 2025 Test and Reserve Driver. We're delighted to announce our Alpine Academy driver extends his role to join our pool of Test and Reserve Drivers for the 2025 season." In his role as a Test and Reserve Driver, Maini’s responsibilities will include supporting Alpine’s car development and set-up strategies using the driver-in-loop simulator at the team's Enstone base. Additionally, Maini will participate in Alpine’s Testing of Previous Cars (TPC) Programme, where he will gain hands-on experience driving modern Formula 1 machinery.
Reflecting on his new role, Kush Maini said:
"I am delighted to step up to the role of Test and Reserve Driver for BWT Alpine Formula One Team this season. Since joining the Alpine Academy ahead of last year, I have been incredibly welcomed in the entire Alpine family. I’m very excited to begin the role as soon as possible but for now, my focus is on my third season in Formula 2 kicking off this weekend in Australia."
Julian Rouse, Alpine Academy Director, expressed confidence in Maini’s growth:
"Kush has impressed the team across his TPC performances and Formula 2 results. His expanded role will allow us to tap into his talent and strengthen our pool of driving resources during the busy season." Maini’s progress has been noteworthy in the FIA Formula 2 Championship, where he secured five podium finishes, including a victory in Hungary. Despite finishing 13th in the 2024 F2 standings, his performances demonstrated resilience and consistency. As Maini continues to sharpen his skills in Formula 2 with DAMS, his expanded role at Alpine F1 positions him closer to a potential debut on the Formula 1 grid. Kush’s former Invicta Racing teammate Gabriel Bortoleto, who won the F2 Championship last year, has also been picked by Kick Sauber-Ferrari for the upcoming season, further highlighting the strength of the emerging racing talent. With Maini’s progression to the Test and Reserve Driver role, Indian motorsport fans can look forward to another promising driver inching closer to the ultimate dream — a spot on the Formula 1 grid.
