Tirumala Tirupati seers have initiated a hunger strike to protest the development of the Mumtaz Hotel near the holy Tirumala temple, claiming it would compromise the sanctity of the sacred seven hills. The protest is aimed at Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrabu Naidu and Deputy CM Pawan Kalyan, as the seers seek answers regarding the hotel project.
The Mumtaz Hotel is planned to be a 100-room, 5-star facility, with a total investment of Rs 250 crore. Located in the Alipiri area near the temple, the hotel is scheduled to be operational by March 2027. The controversy revolves around the proximity of the hotel to the temple, with many Hindus viewing the project as "objectionable" due to its location and the hotel brand name, Mumtaz, which they believe could offend religious sentiments. The Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) board has formally requested the Andhra Pradesh government to cancel the land allocation for the hotel, citing the impact on the temple's sanctity. Despite this, the YSRCP-led government under Jagan Mohan Reddy proceeded with the plan, citing an agreement made during the previous administration, led by Chandrabu Naidu, who originally aimed to establish the "Devalokam" project in the area.
The hotel is set to feature luxury amenities like fine-dining restaurants, conference facilities, a spa, fitness centre, and a swimming pool, making it a major tourism project. However, its location near one of India's holiest sites has raised concerns among religious leaders, who believe that the construction of a luxury hotel in such close proximity to the temple is inappropriate and disrespectful to devotees. With the TTD's opposition, and growing unrest among religious groups, the Mumtaz Hotel project remains a highly contested issue in Andhra Pradesh.
