Mumbai’s urban mobility is set for a major transformation with the introduction of a unified ticketing system called Mitra. The new platform, announced by the Maharashtra government, will allow commuters to use a single card or mobile application to access various public transport services, including local trains, BEST buses, Metro rail, and even app-based cabs.
The initiative was revealed after a meeting between Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, who discussed the implementation of the Integrated Ticketing System (ITS) for the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. Powered by the Open Network for Digital Commerce in Commuter Convenience (ONDCC) platform, the system will make daily travel more convenient and efficient for Mumbai's commuters.
With Mitra, passengers will be able to plan their journeys better, reduce wait times, and purchase tickets for multiple transport services with just one click. The app will integrate schedules of local trains, Metro, buses, and taxis, ensuring seamless travel across different modes of transport. Vaishnaw emphasized that the system would align train, Metro, and bus schedules to improve connectivity and reduce transit time.
The unified ticketing system is part of the government’s broader goal of modernizing Mumbai’s urban transport network, leveraging technology to accommodate the city’s growing population and increasing transportation demands.
