The Waqf Amendment Bill, which has sparked significant opposition, recently saw its draft report adopted by a Joint Parliamentary Committee with a 16-11 majority vote. Opposition MPs have raised concerns about the process, accusing BJP members of ignoring their objections and rushing through the report. The Bill, which was introduced in the Lok Sabha by Union Minority Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju in August 2024, seeks to amend the Waqf Act and bring reforms in how Waqf boards operate in India.
Opposition MPs, including AIMIM leader Asaduddin Owaisi, Congress MP Syed Naseer Hussain, and DMK MP A Raja, allege that the amendments proposed in the report are unconstitutional and against the interests of the Muslim community. Owaisi criticized the Bill for allowing non-Muslims to be members of Waqf boards, which he believes could lead to government interference in religious affairs. Hussain and Raja further argued that the Bill targets minority communities and undermines Waqf boards' autonomy.
The draft report, which spanned 655 pages, was shared with MPs only hours before the vote, limiting their time to review and submit dissent notes. Despite objections from opposition members, the Committee proceeded with the draft's adoption, with the final report to be presented to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla.
The BJP, represented by committee chairperson Jagdambika Pal, defended the report, claiming that it addressed concerns and would enhance Waqf boards' efficiency. The amendments proposed by BJP members were largely accepted, while most opposition suggestions were ignored.
The Waqf Amendment Bill has now become a point of contention, with opposition leaders warning of legal challenges and vocal opposition in Parliament. The Bill, which aims to reform Waqf boards, has become a focal point for debates about constitutional rights and the protection of minority interests in India.
