The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) celebrated a major milestone with the successful launch of its 100th rocket mission on Wednesday. The mission saw the GSLV-F15 launch vehicle precisely injecting the NVS-02 navigation satellite into its designated Geostationary Transfer Orbit (GTO). This launch, which took place early in the morning from Sriharikota, was also the first for ISRO in 2025.
The event was especially significant as it marked the first mission under ISRO's new chairman, V Narayanan. In a celebratory gesture, the space agency shared a minute-long onboard footage of the GSLV-F15 launch on the social media platform X, expressing that India's space program continues to inspire the world.
The GSLV-F15 rocket, which has a history of both successes and failures, had been known for a higher failure rate in the past. Out of 16 launches, it had six failures, reflecting a 37% failure rate. In contrast, India’s latest launch vehicle, the Launch Vehicle Mark-3 (also known as the 'Bahubali' rocket), boasts a perfect 100% success rate. The GSLV-F15 rocket, however, is a product of ISRO's perseverance and mastery of cryogenic engine technology, which India developed over two decades after being denied the technology by Russia under U.S. pressure.
This successful mission is also noteworthy as it marks the 100th launch from ISRO's spaceport at Sriharikota and the 17th flight of the GSLV series. The payload fairing of the GSLV-F15 features a metallic version with a 3.4-meter diameter.
