In an effort to curb excessive spending and reduce alcohol abuse, Ballo village in Punjab’s Bathinda district has introduced a unique initiative. The village panchayat has announced a cash reward of Rs 21,000 for families who choose not to serve liquor or play DJ music at wedding functions.
Sarpanch Amarjit Kaur explained that such practices often lead to quarrels and disturbances, particularly when alcohol is involved, and loud music disrupts the studies of students. The initiative aims to promote more modest wedding celebrations and reduce unnecessary expenditures on extravagant ceremonies.
The panchayat’s move has garnered attention for its potential to bring positive change to the village, which has a population of around 5,000 people. The decision is part of a broader effort to encourage healthier, more community-focused events.
Additionally, the panchayat has put forward a request to the government to build a stadium in the village to foster youth participation in sports. A proposal for a biogas plant and providing free organic farming seeds to interested farmers are also part of the panchayat's plans for improving the village's sustainability and well-being.
