Congress has criticized National Conference leader and Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah for his changing approach to EVM (Electronic Voting Machine) allegations. This criticism came after Abdullah dismissed claims raised by Congress and other opposition parties about EVM manipulation following the Maharashtra election results. Senior Congress leader Manickam Tagore pointed out that while opposition parties like the NCP, Shiv Sena, and Samajwadi Party have questioned the integrity of EVMs, the Congress Working Committee only addressed concerns with the Election Commission. Tagore questioned why Omar Abdullah, after becoming Chief Minister, is dismissing the EVM concerns raised by Congress partners.
Omar Abdullah, however, defended the use of EVMs, stating that political parties should not change their stance based on electoral outcomes. He argued that parties that doubt the EVM process should refrain from contesting elections. This debate comes after Sharad Pawar's party, which faced a significant defeat in the Maharashtra elections, raised concerns about the functioning of EVMs.
The National Conference and Congress had contested the October Jammu and Kashmir elections together, but now face differences over the handling of the EVM controversy.
