On Tuesday, the Congress-led INDIA opposition bloc moved a no-confidence motion against Rajya Sabha Chairperson Jagdeep Dhankhar, accusing him of biased functioning of the House. The motion, supported by over 50 MPs from Congress, Trinamool Congress, Aam Aadmi Party, Samajwadi Party, Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, and the Rashtriya Janata Dal, was submitted to the Rajya Sabha Secretariat.
While the motion’s chances of success seem slim, with sources in Trinamool suggesting that the opposition lacks the numbers in the Rajya Sabha to carry the proposal, the motion was filed on principle. The rulebook dictates that the motion must be approved by a simple majority in both Houses, but with the opposition lacking a clear majority, the likelihood of Dhankhar’s removal is low.
This move came shortly after tensions in both Houses of Parliament, with BJP and opposition MPs clashing over several issues, including allegations linking Congress leader Sonia Gandhi to businessman George Soros. The opposition accused the ruling party of stifling discussions on important issues like violence in Sambhal, Uttar Pradesh, and farmers' MSP protests.
The motion was also prompted by the handling of the confrontations in the Rajya Sabha, where opposition leaders like Mallikarjun Kharge claimed that Dhankhar allowed one-sided comments against Sonia Gandhi, while rejecting multiple notices from BJP MPs on the same issue.
