Norwegian diplomat and former UN Environment Programme Executive Director Erik Solheim has strongly criticized the US government's recent report regarding the Adani Group, calling it a case of "American overreach." The report alleges that certain individuals linked to the Adani Group discussed bribes to secure solar energy contracts in India, but Solheim pointed out that the allegations lack evidence of actual bribe payments or involvement from the Adani Group’s top leaders, Gautam and Sagar Adani.
Solheim expressed concerns over the impact of such actions, stating that they undermine India’s efforts toward green energy transformation and waste valuable resources in legal battles instead of focusing on renewable energy projects. He also questioned the appropriateness of such international interference, drawing a comparison with how the US would react if Indian courts were to charge American business leaders for alleged crimes committed in the US.
Supporting Solheim's views, senior lawyer Mahesh Jethmalani dismissed the allegations as politically motivated and part of a broader strategy to destabilize India. He criticized the US report for lacking evidence of bribery and said it was based on unsubstantiated claims of bribery discussions.
The Adani Group has refuted the accusations, asserting that there is no evidence to support the claims and no involvement of its directors or listed companies in any illicit activities. The conglomerate emphasized that the report was based on claims about promised or discussed bribes, without any proof of execution.
