A 15-year-old female student was identified as the suspect in a tragic shooting at Abundant Life Christian School in Madison, Wisconsin, on Monday, December 16. The incident resulted in the deaths of a teen pupil and a teacher, and injuries to six others, including two students with life-threatening wounds.
Details of the Incident
The shooting occurred just before 11:00 AM local time at Abundant Life Christian School, a K-12 facility with approximately 400 students. Police arrived at the scene within three minutes of receiving a 911 call about an active shooter.
Authorities confirmed that the teen suspect, who attended the school, was also found dead at the scene. One of the victims had already died by the time emergency responders arrived, while the other succumbed to injuries en route to the hospital.
Among the injured were four students and two teachers. Two students remain in critical condition, while the other victims have been released from the hospital.
Response from Authorities
Madison Police Chief Shon Barnes stated, “Today truly is a sad day for Madison and for our country. It is a day that I believe will live in our collective minds for a very, very long time.”
Barnes added that the shooting appeared to be confined to a single space, possibly a classroom or hallway. He emphasized that there were no prior warning signs of violence, and the suspect’s family is cooperating with law enforcement.
“We do not know that the shooter had any prior contact with law enforcement,” Barnes said. “The motivation behind this tragedy remains unclear.”
School and Security Measures
Barbara Wiers, a school official, said the incident has deeply affected the school community. While the school does not have metal detectors or a school resource officer, other security measures, such as visual scanning, were in place.
Parents were quickly reunited with their children following the tragedy, as authorities worked to ensure safety and provide support to the victims’ families
