In a surprising political development, the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) coalition, comprising TDP, BJP, and Janasena, has decided not to contest the MLC by-election scheduled for August 30th in Andhra Pradesh. This decision follows the disqualification of YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) MLC Vamshi Srinivas Yadav, who defected to Janasena, leaving the MLC seat under the local bodies quota in Visakhapatnam vacant. The Election Commission subsequently announced the by-election.
YSRCP leader Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy swiftly responded by nominating veteran Uttarandhra politician Botsa Satyanarayana for the vacant MLC position. Botsa has already filed his nomination, positioning YSRCP favorably in the race. Despite initial speculation about the NDA fielding a strong candidate to challenge YSRCP, TDP President Chandrababu Naidu ultimately decided against it, citing a desire to maintain political dignity and decorum.
Naidu’s decision comes after extensive consultations with senior leaders and reflects an acknowledgment of YSRCP’s significant advantage among the local body voters, including ZPTCs, MPTCs, and GVMC Corporators. With the NDA opting out, YSRCP’s path to retaining the MLC seat is now largely seen as a formality, underscoring the shifting dynamics in Andhra Pradesh politics.
