Ratan Tata, one of India’s most revered industrialists and philanthropists, passed away on October 9, 2024, but his legacy continues to shine through an extraordinary act of kindness detailed in his final will. Known for his humility and empathy, Tata ensured that the people who served him faithfully—his household staff, office assistants, and even his pet dog—were well taken care of.
According to a report by The Times of India, Tata allocated nearly Rs 3.5 crore to his long-serving team. His cook Rajan Shaw received over Rs 1 crore, including a Rs 51 lakh loan waiver. His butler Subbaiah Konar was gifted Rs 66 lakh, and driver Raju Leon was left with Rs 1.5 lakh and an Rs 18 lakh loan cancellation. Tata’s trusted assistant Shantanu Naidu had his Rs 1 crore MBA loan from Cornell completely waived.
Tata’s thoughtfulness extended even to part-time helpers, peons, caretakers, and personal assistants, with bequests ranging from Rs 50,000 to Rs 5 lakh. Remarkably, he also set aside Rs 12 lakh for the care of his beloved German shepherd, Tito, with funds to be distributed quarterly for the dog’s upkeep.
He also waived a Rs 23.7 lakh loan to his former neighbor Jake Malite, now settled in Switzerland, and gifted land worth Rs 85 lakh in Seychelles to his investment firm RNT Associates.
Notably, one-third of his residual estate (excluding shares and real estate) was left to Mohini Dutta, a former employee of the Taj Hotels. His two half-sisters, Shireen and Deanna Jejeebhoy, will each receive another third of the estate.
Tata’s close confidants, including Mehli Mistry (who received his Alibaug bungalow) and Darius Khambata (executor of his will), were each gifted Rs 5 lakh as a token of gratitude.
In a final detail symbolic of his humility, Tata had his funeral expenses set at just Rs 2,500, also covered by his estate. His will, dated February 23, 2022, stands as a testament to the values he lived by—gratitude, simplicity, and service.
