US Secretary of State Antony Blinken addressed the controversial comments made by President-elect Donald Trump regarding the potential US acquisition of Greenland, stating that such an action is not realistic and urging the world not to waste time discussing it. Speaking in Paris during his farewell tour, Blinken stressed that the Biden administration's foreign policy focuses on maintaining strong alliances, with the belief that the US is more effective when working alongside its allies.
In response to Trump's comments about Greenland, which were made following his election victory, Blinken pointed out that the idea of the US seizing Greenland is unlikely to come to fruition. Trump had previously stated that the US needed the island for economic security and even suggested using military action to acquire it. However, both Greenland and Denmark, the autonomous territory's governing country, have rejected these claims.
French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot also weighed in, dismissing the possibility of US forces invading Denmark, a NATO ally, but acknowledging that Europe faces growing challenges as other powers exert influence, particularly in the Arctic. While the US maintains strategic interests in Greenland, especially concerning national security and natural resources, the island's government has expressed a desire for independence and affirmed that Greenland is not for sale.
In light of the changing dynamics in the Arctic, including Russia and China’s increasing presence, Greenland's Prime Minister Mute Egede has emphasized the island’s commitment to independence while continuing to work with the US and other NATO allies to maintain security and stability in the region.
