As concerns rise over the outbreak of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) in China, with subsequent detection in India, the World Health Organization (WHO) has issued a statement to ease public fears. The WHO explained that HMPV is a common respiratory virus that typically causes mild symptoms, similar to the common cold. It emphasized that the virus has been circulating globally for years and is not new.
Recent reports from China highlighted an increase in respiratory infections, including HMPV, influenza, rhinovirus, and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), especially in northern provinces. However, the WHO assured that the increase in cases is within the expected range for the winter season in the Northern Hemisphere. It also confirmed that China’s healthcare system has not been overwhelmed, with hospital utilization lower than last year, and no emergency declarations have been made.
WHO epidemiologist Margaret Harris clarified that HMPV has been circulating since 2001, and while some cases can lead to hospitalization with bronchitis or pneumonia, most people experience mild symptoms and recover after a few days. India’s health ministry echoed the WHO’s message, reassuring the public that there is no immediate cause for concern regarding HMPV.
Countries, including China, have been sharing public health messages on preventing the spread of respiratory infections, urging citizens to take precautionary steps during the winter months.
