On November 18, 2024, Telangana's Transport Minister Ponnam Prabhakar unveiled a groundbreaking electric vehicle (EV) policy designed to significantly reduce air pollution and promote cleaner transportation across the state. The policy includes an array of incentives aimed at encouraging both individuals and businesses to transition to electric vehicles.
Key features of the policy include a 100% tax exemption on all types of EVs, such as two-wheelers, four-wheelers, and commercial vehicles, along with no registration fees for EVs. This move is expected to lower the financial barriers for those considering the switch to eco-friendly transport options.
A major component of the policy is the introduction of electric buses in Hyderabad and Secunderabad, the two cities at the heart of Telangana’s urban transport network. The state plans to replace up to 3,000 existing buses with electric alternatives, which will significantly reduce the carbon footprint of public transport in the region.
Minister Ponnam Prabhakar emphasized that this policy is a part of Telangana’s broader efforts to build a cleaner and greener state, highlighting the leadership of Chief Minister K. Chandrashekar Rao and Deputy Chief Minister Bhatti Vikramarka. Their vision is to make Hyderabad one of the most sustainable and pollution-free cities in India.
The policy will be effective until December 31, 2026, providing ample time for citizens to take advantage of these incentives and for the state to build out the necessary EV infrastructure.
