The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has officially taken over the investigation of three significant cases linked to the recent wave of violence in Manipur, following an order from the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA). This decision comes in response to the escalating violence and disorder in the state, which has led to fatalities and heightened tensions between the Kuki-Zo-Hmar and Meitei communities.
The cases now under NIA's jurisdiction include:
A gun battle between Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel and Kuki militants in the Jiribam area, which resulted in the deaths of at least 10 militants.
The abduction of six individuals in Jiribam, whose bodies were found later. A separate case has been registered for this incident.
The transfer of these cases to the NIA is a direct response to the deteriorating security situation in Manipur, where ethnic violence between the Kuki and Meitei communities has reached alarming levels. The violence has disrupted public order, triggered fatalities, and posed a significant threat to the peace and stability of the region. In light of this, the MHA has empowered the NIA to lead the investigations, aiming for a more coordinated and effective approach to the crisis.
On November 16, 2024, the Ministry of Home Affairs issued a statement confirming the transfer of these cases to the NIA, explaining that the move would ensure a thorough investigation into the underlying causes of the violence, as well as its broader impact on peace in the region.
The MHA also acknowledged the fragile security situation in the state, with armed groups from both communities engaged in violent activities. To address this, the central government has deployed an additional 2,000 personnel from the Central Armed Police Force (CAPF) to support law enforcement and restore order. If necessary, further CAPF companies will be sent to bolster security efforts.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah has been closely monitoring the situation and recently convened a high-level meeting in New Delhi with senior officials to review the developments in Manipur. He is also scheduled to chair another meeting to discuss additional steps to curb the ongoing unrest.
Additionally, the MHA has issued a public appeal to refrain from spreading rumors and has called on citizens to cooperate with security forces to help restore peace. Authorities have warned of strict actions against anyone involved in violent or disruptive activities, as they aim to bring the situation under control.
