Technicolor India, a leading visual effects (VFX) and animation studio, has announced the closure of its operations in Bengaluru and Mumbai, affecting 3,200 employees. The decision is part of a global shutdown by its parent company, Technicolor Group, headquartered in Paris.This sudden move has left thousands of employees in distress, particularly in Bengaluru, where nearly 3,000 professionals were employed. The closure marks a significant blow to India's VFX and animation industry, which has been a growing hub for global media production.
 

Financial Struggles and Industry Challenges Lead to Shutdown

The decision to shut down operations was confirmed by Technicolor India’s Managing Director, Biren Ghose, who addressed employees in a town hall meeting. He cited severe financial difficulties as the primary reason behind the closure, stating that the company could no longer sustain operations."Technicolor India is financially and operationally not moving forward. We reached a state where we are not able to function as an organisation anymore," Ghose stated, as reported by The Hindu.
 

The Indian management was reportedly unaware of the closure until receiving an unexpected email from Technicolor Group CEO Caroline Parot. In her email, she explained that despite attempts to secure additional funding, the company was unable to continue and had to take legal steps to restructure or shut down operations globally.The shutdown has resulted in the immediate unemployment of thousands of professionals, including animators, lighting artists, special effects experts, and image rendering specialists. Many employees were also denied access to their offices, preventing them from collecting personal belongings, adding to the distress.
