Former tennis world number one Simona Halep announced her retirement on Tuesday after suffering a first-round loss at the WTA Cluj-Napoca tournament in her native Romania. The 33-year-old Halep was defeated 6-1, 6-1 by 72nd-ranked Italian Lucia Bronzetti."I don't know if it is with joy or sadness that I speak to you but I made this decision in my soul and conscience," Halep told the crowd. "My body no longer follows, but today I wanted to play and say my goodbyes on the court."
Halep had been working on returning to form after a doping ban, but she had withdrawn from Australian Open qualifying last month due to pain in her knee and shoulder. Her career had been on hold since October 2022, following a positive test for roxadustat at the US Open. The banned substance, used to treat anemia, was found in a tainted supplement, and after appealing to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, her four-year ban was reduced to nine months.
The two-time Grand Slam champion, who won the French Open in 2018 and Wimbledon in 2019, struggled to regain her former level after her return to tennis in 2023. Halep reached the top of the world rankings in October 2017 and held the position for 64 weeks but was never able to return to that peak after her suspension.Throughout her 19-year career, Halep won 24 WTA titles, including two Grand Slams, and played in three other major finals. With her retirement, the tennis world bids farewell to one of its most accomplished players.
