The Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has recently issued 21,885 pension payment orders as part of its ongoing efforts to implement higher pensions under the Employees' Pension Scheme (EPS) 1995. As per Minister of State for Labour & Employment Shobha Karandlaje's written response in Lok Sabha, a total of 17.48 lakh applications were submitted by pensioners and members seeking to increase their pension by making higher contributions.
The EPFO has issued demand notices to 1.65 lakh members, informing them to deposit additional amounts required to qualify for a higher pension. As of January 28, 2025, the process is underway, with a significant number of cases being monitored and expedited. The pension cases are being processed based on a landmark Supreme Court decision from November 2022, which supported the members' right to higher pensions.
In addition to traditional methods, the EPFO has introduced online facilities to enable members, pensioners, and employers to submit applications for validation and joint options for higher pensions. These applications were accepted up until July 2023, with the final deadline extended for employers to forward applications by May 31, 2024. A last opportunity to submit applications was provided until January 31, 2025, ensuring that all eligible individuals have a chance to claim their higher pension benefits.
