A Cessna 208 passenger aircraft, operated by Kamala Air, lost control and crashed near Honolulu Airport in Hawaii on a training flight. The crash occurred in an industrial area when the plane lost altitude rapidly, made a sharp left turn, and collided with a vacant building. The incident tragically claimed the lives of passenger Preston Kaluhiwa and 22-year-old trainee pilot Hiram deFries.
Following the crash, the aircraft caught fire, and a large plume of smoke rose from the site. Emergency responders, including the Honolulu Fire Department and local law enforcement, arrived at the scene promptly. Fortunately, no other casualties were reported.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has launched an investigation into the crash. Witnesses reported hearing a loud crash, followed by smoke. A recording of the pilot's distress call, moments before the crash, was shared by local media. In the exchange, the pilot informed air traffic control that the plane was out of control and unable to level off before the crash occurred.
Hawaii Governor Josh Green expressed condolences, offering support to those affected by the tragic event. The FAA will continue to investigate the incident, and the cause may take some time to determine.
